St. George's Cathedral

St. George's Cathedral

In the center of Georgetown stands St. George's Cathedral. The cathedral is in the Gothic style and made of entirely a native wood called greenheart. It was consecrated on November 8, 1894, and at that time, was the largest wooden church in the world. Inside, it contains artifacts from all over the world. Queen Victoria herself donated a large chandelier and the Bishop of Barbados gifted a brass lectern, shaped like an eagle. St. George’s Cathedral combines impressive architecture with the rich colonial history of Guyana.
